Roof Leak Repair

Every once in awhile, home owners begin to hear the dreaded dripping of a roResidential Roof Leak Repairof leak. Roof leaks are the most evident after storms, as your family clamors to get all the pots and pans to catch the influx of water while it rains, but the damage to your roof has probably been developing for a great deal of time. Roof leaks indicate that something has been damaged or worn away inside the interior structure of your roof. The protective exterior has been compromised, and water has slowly began to seep through.

A roof leak is a cause for concern, and something you should evaluate the situation right away, if you are able to do so. There are several reasons your roof could be leaking, so it’s important to be aware of the factors that go into creating a roof leak.

What are the Signs of a Roof Leak?

The first and most apparent signal of a roof leak is the dripping of water during or after a rain storm. However, there are plenty of cases where moisture has been leaking in overtime. There a number of other signals that indicate your roof has a leak, including:

  • Water stains on the ceiling or walls
  • A damp, musty smell in your attic
  • Missing shingles on your roof: these spots are places where your roof has been damaged and is then susceptible to moisture intrusion
  • A large amount of debris on your roof: trees and branches can penetrate the exterior of your roof. To avoid this, take the time to trim your tree’s, and cut back any tall shrubbery that might hit your roof during high winds.
  • A series of severe weather storms

How to Find the Source of a Roof Leak

When you’re attempting to track down the source of your roof leak, it’s important to note a few things. When you are seeing water stains in your home, remember that the water gets diverted once it penetrates the roof and comes through the ceiling. The water has been diverted through the insulation, the interior of your walls, the beams in your ceiling, and much more as the water flows through your home. This is important to note because you can’t just follow the water stains and expect to find the source of the issue. An effective way to begin to track the source of the leak is to get into the attic. If you’re comfortable, get up there with a flashlight and begin to look for signs of water. Look for water stains, black spots, and mold, as these will likely be located near the leak in the roof. If you can’t get up into the attic, you can try the water hose method. Get on the roof with a water hose, run water in isolated areas, while someone is inside looking for a drip or leak. Be sure to do different sections of your roof at a time, that way you attempt to narrow down where the leak is truly located.
